Trump suggests a merger between Canada and the US using “economic strength”, but Trudeau firmly rejects it, declaring that “there is not the slightest chance” that Canada will give up its sovereignty

In a scathing response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau categorically dismissed the idea floated by US President-elect Donald Trump of using “economic muscle” to merge Canada with the United States.

“There is no chance of Canada becoming part of the United States,” Trudeau wrote on his social media this Tuesday (6), making it clear that any suggestion in this regard is unacceptable.

Trudeau also highlighted that the relationship between the two countries must be based on mutual respect and partnership: “Workers and communities in both countries benefit from being each other’s largest commercial and security partners.”

Trump, known for his controversial statements, defended the possibility of integrating Canada into the USA during a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, stating that he would be willing to employ “economic force” to bring this merger to fruition.

The president-elect’s stance went further, with even more surprising statements: he refused to rule out the use of military force to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.

Trump’s statements quickly caused global repercussions, with severe criticism about the limits of international politics and the implications of such positions. For Trudeau and Canadians, the message is clear: Canada is sovereign and will not give in to any pressure.
