The European Commission continues to take steps in the construction of ‘Europe Fortaleza’. First, it was the so -called ‘solidarity to the letter’ agreed in the migration and asylum pact that will begin to apply in the EU in 2026 and that allows member states to pay for rejecting refugees. Then the foundations for legalizing deportation centers in third countries such as those designed by the Italian ultra -right Giorgia Meloni in Albania were legalized. And now Brussels raise the practice elimination of the requirements for third countries that are considered insurance to facilitate even more than member states can expel migrants without papers to whom the application for asylum is rejected.

The main change that Brussels raises in the review of the legislation is that the requirement that there is a connection between the migrant and the third country to which it is expelled ceases to be an obligation. The European Commission leaves member states to include that condition in its national legislation.

The link may limit the migrant person to have gone through that third country in their “transit” to the European Union. “It will be enough to apply the concept of the third safe country,” says the European Commission in a statement on the new rules, which will now have to go through the European Parliament and the EU Council, where the governments of the 27 are represented, before adopting a final agreement.

The ‘castor’ of third safe countries can be even greater through agreements or agreements signed by the Member States. “This agreement or agreement will ensure that there is an examination of the request for effective protection in the third safe country, so that applicants can receive protection if justified,” the European Commission points out. The asset that the community executive is saved is that these bilateral agreements must have their approval.

The other great change raised by the European Commission and that is a blow to migrants is that resources do not suppose a stoppage of the expulsion process: “To reduce procedural delays and avoid abuse, the commission proposes that resources against inadmissibility decisions based on the concept of the third country safe cease to have automatic suspensive effect.”

In a context in which the EU tightens its immigration policies, the Platform for International Cooperation of Persons without Documents regrets the proposal of the European Commission for the so -called safe countries that, in their opinion, “is a blow against people who seek protection and support in Europe.” “We can expect separate families and deported people without due judicial control to places they do not even know. This is not a way of being up to the European values of human dignity and human rights,” says Silvia Carta, in a statement.
