During the first meeting of the BRICS in its expanded format, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced the development of a trading platform in national currencies.
The declaration took place in Russia, where ministers of Foreign Relationss of the block gathered, also marking the entry of new members as Will, Egypt, Ethiopia e United Arab Emirates.
The main objective of the meeting was to create a financial system that allows international trade without relying on the US dollar, especially crucial for countries like Russia e Willwho face international sanctions.
Lavrov criticized the United States and its allies for trying to maintain a dominant system, using “economic instruments as weapons.”
The Brazilian chancellor Mauro Vieira also defended the use of national currencies, emphasizing the importance of the financial independence of emerging countries.
With Brazil scheduled to assume the presidency of BRICS in 2025, Vieira stated that the new payment system will be a priority on the agenda.
In addition to economic discussions, Vieira addressed the need to reform the UN Security Council and the expansion of BRICSdelicate issues that have encountered resistance, especially from China, in relation to the inclusion of new permanent members such as India and Brazil.
The meeting also included a moment of tribute to the late Iranian president Ibrahim Raisifollowed by Lavrov’s scathing criticism of USAreiterating the growing role of BRICS in the formation of a new multipolar world order.
