Block suggests Israel out of Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem
The final statement of the 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro again defended, as in previous statements, the solution of two states, one Palestinian and one Israeli, to the Middle East conflict that lasts more than seven decades.
“We reaffirm our support for the full adhesion of the State of Palestine to the United Nations in the context of the unwavering commitment to the solution of two states, which includes the establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable Palestine state within the internationally recognized borders of 1967,” says the document in which Tel Aviv took control of Gaza’s strip of Gaza. Israel rejects the solution of two states.
Despite being a member of the BRICS, Iran expressed, by note, a different position. The Iranian chancellor called the solution of two “unreal” states and defended the unique state solution to Muslims, Christians and Jews.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers that a fair solution to Palestine is a referendum with the participation of all the original inhabitants of Palestine, including Jews, Christians and Muslims, and this is not an unrealistic or unattainable solution,” said Iranian Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi.
The Iranian chancellor said Palestine should follow the path taken by South Africa.
“Like the apartheid regime in South Africa was stabilized through a referendum and democracy, not by the division of South Africa into two parts, white and black. The apartheid regime in South Africa was overthrown by the fight of blacks, no one recommended the idea of two states,” he added.
Occupied territories
In the official document of the Rio Summit, published on Sunday (6), BRICS defended the complete withdrawal of Israel from the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Palestinian territories occupied by the Israeli since 1967. The group also calls for the release of the detained hostages “contrary to international law.”
The document cites the “deep concern” in the face of the resumption of Israel’s continuous attacks against Gaza, and the obstruction of food aid, also condemning the use of hunger as a method of war.
“We exhort the parties to engage in good faith in new negotiations with a view to obtaining an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire; the complete removal of the Israeli forces of the Gaza Strip and all other parts of the occupied Palestinian territory; the liberation of all hostages and detained in violation of international law; countries gathered in Brazil.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu landed in the United States (USA) on Sunday to discuss, with President Donald Trump, the future of war in Gaza. Trump and Netanyahu have defended mass emigration of Palestinians from the territory. Trump has even proposed that the US take control of the enclave. At BRICS, countries rejected this proposal.
“We express our firm opposition to the forced, temporary or permanent displacement, under any pretext, from any part of the Palestinian population of the busy Palestinian territory, as well as any geographical or demographic changes in the territory of the Gaza Strip,” the document says.
While following the war in Gaza, Israel expands forced displacements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories considered Palestinians by international law. It is estimated that 40,000 Palestinians have been expelled from their homes in West Bank in recent months, setting up the largest military operation in this Palestinian region in 20 years.
In Rio’s final statement, BRICS pointed out that the Gaza Strip is an inseparable part of Palestinian territory. “We emphasize, in this regard, the importance of unifying the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under the Palestinian Authority,” the text said.
Understand
In 1947, a United Nations Resolution (UN) proposed the separation of historical Palestine into two states, one for Jews and one for the Arabs. Although the measure was rejected by the Arab countries in 1948, Israel proclaims its independence, leading the first war of the current conflict.
As a result of Israel’s creation, about 750,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes and about 500 Palestinian villages were destroyed, starting the drama of Palestinian refugees. In 1967, Israel took control of Gaza and the West Bank, which were under the control of Egypt and Jordan, respectively.
In 2005, Israel vacated Gaza, but kept siege to the territory, controlling the entry and exit of goods and people from the Enclave governed by Hamas. Over the years, Israel has expanded standardization with countries in the region through the agreements of Abraham, also articulated by Trump.
In 2023, Hamas promoted the attack on Israel that made 1,200 victims and 220 hostages, starting the current phase of the conflict. Israel’s response to Hamas’s attack has been considered a genocide by international countries and organizations, which claim that the ultimate goal is to complete Gaza’s annexation. Tel Aviv maintains that it seeks to free the hostages and destroy Hamas completely.
