NOTE OF SOLIDARITY TO THE ARTIST ROGER WATERS
The movements of solidarity with the Palestinian people, gathered under the call of the BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), express their deep solidarity with the renowned British artist, Roger Waters, who has been the target of a smear campaign promoted by Zionist entities in Brazil and in the world. This campaign seeks to discredit Waters and prevent concerts on his “Farewell” tour, claiming alleged “exaltation” of Nazism.
It is important to note that, over more than 40 years of his career, Waters has been an outspoken critic of fascism, peoples’ oppression and authoritarianism. His position of opposition to colonial and oppressive governments and states has always been central and historical in his cultural and artistic production. In his famous portrayal of Pink Floyd, Waters embodies the role of a Nazi general during a fascist rally, using the image as a powerful metaphor to express the horrors of Nazi-fascism and the extreme right. This iconic depiction was immortalized in the movie “Pink Floyd: The Wall” (1982), where actor Bob Geldof plays the lead role.
In addition, the album “The Wall”, composed by Waters, is a work that was inspired by the artist’s personal history. His father, killed during World War II while participating in a resistance campaign against the Nazis, is a significant source of influence for the album’s theme. Therefore, accusing Waters of exalting Nazism is a flagrant distortion of the facts and an unfair attempt to vilify him.
It is critical to understand that the charge of anti-Semitism is often used as a strategy to silence voices critical of Israeli apartheid. The BDS movement has already widely discussed the instrumentalization of anti-Semitism in order to delegitimize criticism of the unfair and discriminatory treatment imposed on the Palestinian people. In this context, it is even more unacceptable that the Brazilian state gives in to Zionist pressures and allows defamation to compromise freedom of expression and the ability of artists like Roger Waters to manifest themselves.
Therefore, we reiterate our solidarity with Roger Waters and all those who are victims of these Zionist smear campaigns. We strongly repudiate the dishonesty of these accusations of anti-Semitism, which are used as a way to divert the focus from human rights violations and the policies of occupation and apartheid promoted by the State of Israel. We are committed to the struggle for the Palestinian people’s fundamental human rights and social justice, and we will continue to support artists and activists who speak out in defense of these universal principles.
