President Biden said in a new interview that he would consider quitting if he was diagnosed with a “medical condition” by doctors — providing the clearest indication yet that he may be falling short on his promise to seek a second term.

The 81-year-old president made the comment in a BET interview recorded Tuesday when asked what it would take for him to reconsider his candidacy.

“If I had any medical condition that came up, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you have this problem and that problem,” Biden said in an excerpt released Wednesday (17).

In the same interview, Biden said he feels the need to run again — rather than serve as a “transitional” leader, as he said in 2020 — because the country is “so divided.”

“I said I was going to be a transitional candidate, and I thought I could move on and hand it off to someone else,” he said. “But I didn’t expect things to get so, so, so divided. And frankly, I think the only thing that comes with age is a little bit of wisdom.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Wednesday became the 21st House Democrat to call on Biden to step aside, saying “it’s time for him to pass the baton.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, is widely considered the most likely replacement candidate should Biden drop out before the Nov. 5 election — though some Democrats fear she could fare even worse.

Several doctors who have studied Biden’s public comments have said he may have Parkinson’s disease or a related condition.

But the White House has so far insisted that Biden does not need a new medical exam after his shaky and confusing performance in the June 27 debate, which sparked panic among Democrats about his cognitive fitness for another four-year term.

“As far as, you know, something like a cognitive test … the medical team said that is not warranted in this case,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on July 2.

“We provide a full and transparent annual report on their health. Then they said that’s not guaranteed. It’s not necessary.”

The president was evaluated by a neurologist, Dr. Kevin Cannard, in January ahead of the release of an annual physical in February, the White House says.

Biden has so far rejected calls to consider retirement, despite a wave of concerns from Democrats that he is headed for a landslide defeat by former President Donald Trump, the 78-year-old Republican nominee.

The Democratic National Committee plans to hold a virtual vote to confirm Biden as the party’s nominee next month — saying Wednesday that the digital call would not begin until Aug. 1 after congressional critics blasted an earlier plan to begin voting within days.
