Bitcoin could beat gold in coming years, says macroeconomist

Gold has been a better investment than Bitcoin (BTC) in recent years. But according to macroeconomist Lyn Alden, the tables could be turned in the coming years. She thinks that the digital currency will outperform the precious metal until 2029. And that actually sounds quite logical when we look at the graphs.

Alden puts her money on BTC

In Michaël van de Poppe’s New Era Finance podcast, Alden said that the sentiment around gold is “somewhat euphoric”, while she believes Bitcoin is being treated “unfairly negatively”. As a result, she has higher expectations for Bitcoin in the coming years.

“If I had to bet on Bitcoin versus gold for the next two to three years, I would bet on Bitcoin,” she told the Dutch founder of MN Capital and seasoned crypto analyst.

Bitcoin is often referred to as “digital gold,” but Alden explains that the two assets often move in opposite directions. When gold has had a strong period, Bitcoin can then accelerate again.

Gold has built its reputation as a safe haven over centuries. It is scarce and for a long time formed the basis of the monetary system. Bitcoin has an even more predictable supply, as it has a hard limit of 21 million coins.

But it still has a long way to go to reach the same podium as gold. On the market, Bitcoin often behaves as a risk-on asset.

Can Bitcoin follow impressive gold rally?

2025 was the best year for gold since 1979 with a total increase of 75 percent. At the same time, the Bitcoin price ended with a narrow loss.

In the past, every major Bitcoin bull market started after gold peaked. The only question now is whether gold has already completed its historic run, or whether there is more to come.

In January, the highest rate was reached at around $5,600 per troy ounce (just over 31 grams). The stock is currently down more than 9 percent at $5,088.

Remarkably, it has taken exactly 14 months each time for Bitcoin to reach a bottom in its trading pair with gold. This time, Bitcoin is down 13 months against Bitcoin, offering hope for investors.
