Tigran Gambaryan, a senior Binance employee, has been held in deplorable conditions in Nigeria since February.

Recent footage shows him struggling to walk to court, without the wheelchair he desperately needs. In the viral video, Gambaryan desperately shouts: “I’m not okay, this is fucked up,” as he clings to a guard’s arm.

When the guard refuses to help him, Gambaryan expresses his frustration: “Why can’t I use a wheelchair? This is a sham. I am innocent. Why are you doing this to me?”

What’s going on?

Gambaryan, a former IRS agent and head of financial crimes at Binance, was arrested in Abuja, Nigeria seven months ago after a visit at the invitation of the government. He was initially placed under house arrest, but following the mysterious escape of a colleague, he was transferred to the notorious Kuje Prison.

Although the tax evasion charges have since been dropped, he now faces charges of money laundering, a charge he strongly denies.

International pressure

Gambaryan’s arrest appears to be an attempt by Nigerian authorities to use him as a scapegoat for Binance’s alleged role in the weakening of the Nigerian naira, the local currency.

His family and lawyers call the situation unjust and point to human rights violations. “There needs to be more pressure from the U.S. government,” his wife says. Gambaryan has limited access to his lawyers and minimal U.S. diplomatic support, raising questions about the protection of his rights. As his health deteriorates, the international community continues to monitor the case closely.

It is unclear whether Nigeria will bow to mounting international pressure to release Gambaryan or whether he will remain stuck in a geopolitical game.
