Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians escape the city of Rafah in the south, in one of the largest mass displacements of the war
An Israeli bombardment to a shelter-turned school in the city of Gaza killed at least 27 people, redeeming teams said, and hundreds of thousands in the Rafah area are running away in one of the largest mass displacements of the war in the newly named Israeli campaign to “divide” Gaza’s strip.
Three missiles hit the school Dar Al-Arqam, in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, on Thursday afternoon, said the spokesman for the Civil Defense Agency, Mahmoud Bassal, killing several children and injuring 100 people.
The building was being used as a shelter for Palestinians displaced from their homes. In a statement, the Israeli army said it took precautions to avoid civil victims in bombing of what it described as a control center for the Hamas militant group.
Another 20 people were killed in an air strike at dawn in the suburb of Shejaia, in the city of Gaza, raising the total number of victims reported by the local Ministry of Health to 97 in the last 24 hours.
The intense wave of Israeli bombing occurs amidst a large expansion of Israel’s defense forces (IDF) air operations in the besieged Palestinian territory after Israel’s decision to abandon a two-month ceasefire two weeks ago.
The Israeli army said on Thursday that it reached more than 600 “terrorist targets” in the track since resumed a large scale air attacks on March 18. The Ministry of Health of Gaza, in which the UN trusts for victim data, says 1,163 people have been killed in bombing since the ceasefire collapsed.
On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the army was “taking territory” and “dividing” Gaza. Israel cut humanitarian aid, food and fuel for the track for over a month in an effort to press Hamas.
He gave no details about how much Palestinian Terra Israel intended to capture in the new offensive, but, according to OCHA, the UN Humanitarian Agency, the IDF declared 64% of the territory such as military protection zones and “prohibited” zones for civilians.
Netanyahu’s last announcement renewed permanent displacement fears of 2.3 million residents of the track. It is also likely to ignite the concerns that Israel intends to assume permanent control of the territory.
On Thursday, local media images showed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fleeing the city of Rafah in the South and neighboring areas, while Israeli land troops advanced to create Netanyahu’s newly unnamed security corridor. The movement was prevented, however, by at least three Israeli attacks on the two main roads that lead to the north.
The “Rota Morag” was named after a Jewish settlement between Rafah and Khan Youis, suggesting that the new military zone will separate the two cities from the south just as the Netzarim Corridor of Israel, south of the city of Gaza.
The war in Gaza was triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel, in which Israel says that 1,200 people, most of them civilians, were killed and another 250 were made prisoners. Israel’s military retaliation campaign killed at least 50,357 people in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to the Ministry of Health of the Territory.
The efforts led by Qatar and Egypt mediators to restart ceasefire negotiations have failed so far.
