Apple’s share price rose by 5.09 percent on Wednesday, and the share is already 2.82 percent in the Plus on Thursday in the premarket.
The increase follows the news that Apple is investing another $ 100 billion in production on American soil. This brings the total amount that the tech company allocates for domestic projects at $ 600 billion.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Donald Trump, which puts pressure on companies to retrieve production to the United States.
Factories, AI servers and rare metals
The money goes to a new ‘American Manufacturing Program’ that must speed up the production of chips, components and AI servers in the US. New factories are being built in Texas, Kentucky and Arizona, among others. According to Cook, a factory has already been started in Houston where test servers are produced for AI. “Proudly Made in America,” said the CEO.
In addition, Apple invests in data centers, partnerships, rare earth metals and expansion of the supply chain. A total of 450,000 jobs would be created in all 50 states.
Apple wants to reposition itself in AI
The strategic twist to production and infrastructure comes at a time when Apple is under pressure to also perform in the AI area. Since the unveiling of ‘Apple Intelligence’ in October 2024, the tech giant has difficulty conquering market share. In June, even the CEO of Apple’s AI team left for competitor Meta.
Nevertheless, the company sticks to its AI ambitions. Cook announced that Apple also continues to invest heavily in data center capacity in, among others, North Carolina, Nevada and Oregon.
Political and market reaction
The new investment does not fall from the sky. Trump threatened with high import duties on foreign chips earlier this month. By producing in the US, Apple wants to avoid fines and at the same time respond to the industrial policy of the White House.
The announcement on social media was both praised and criticized. Some users called it a “patriotic move”, while others accused Apple to support Trumps economic agenda.
