Since the so -called “Liberation Day” at the beginning of April – the moment when the US announced new import duties – sentiment among exporters has been considerably deteriorated worldwide. What started as a symbolic policy change now seems to have become the starting point of a broader period of uncertainty.

Exporters are worried

A new worldwide study by Allianz Trade among more than 4,500 exporters from Europe, Asia and North America shows that confidence has fallen considerably. For the introduction of the new American rates, only 5% of the companies surveyed expected a decrease in their export sales; In the meantime, that figure is 42%.

German exporters are among the most concerned group: 39% provides a decrease in turnover. They call geopolitical tensions, protectionism and increasing volatility of currencies as the most important risks for the near future. In sectors that are highly dependent on entered components, such as machine building and electronics, companies even consider temporary production stops to limit losses.

What is striking is that exporters worldwide not only respond to the rates themselves, but especially to the unpredictability of American trade policy. The uncertainty about possible following steps – such as extra rates, barriers or escalations – ensures that long -term plans are postponed or reconsidered.

Threatening economic instability

That uncertainty is not limited to the export sector. The United States recently lost its coveted Triple-A credit status, indicating that even confidence in American financial strength is under pressure. This relegation led to unrest in financial markets, where investors massively took the flight from both shares and crypto assets.

The fear is that the combination of protectionism, geopolitical tensions and decreasing trust in the American economy will put a structural brake on global growth. Certainly for exporters who are highly dependent on open markets and stable trade relationships, 2025 promises to be a challenging year.

What started with one policy decision in Washington has now led to a broader mood of doubt and restraint. For exporters it is no longer a question whether they have to adapt to a more erratic economic climate – but how fast.
