Asian giant donates 69 tons of generator parts, helping Cuba restore 400 MW of power and alleviate the impacts of the electricity crisis on the island
Cuba received a donation sent by the People’s Republic of China consisting of parts and accessories for power generators, benefiting the national electricity grid. The Chinese government’s Cuba Power Generator Equipment and Spare Parts Project results from agreements signed by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Xi Jinping, his counterpart in the Asian nation.
Hua Xin, China’s ambassador to Cuba, said this donation — consisting of 69 tons of radiators, engines and other related supplies — is part of the second assistance package China has provided to Cuba this year.
The donation aims to restore generation to around 400 MW in more than 70 diesel and fuel oil-powered plants across the island, based on the principle of “agility for the most urgent”.
The diplomat praised the friendly ties between the two nations, their efforts to build a community with a shared future and the results of bilateral cooperation in various fields.
Speaking on behalf of the Cuban government and people, Déborah Rivas Saavedra, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, thanked China for the donation, which will facilitate the repair of 38 diesel generators and the maintenance of 50 fuel oil generators. These efforts will make it possible to power 53,200 homes in Cuba and support initiatives to achieve sustainability in the sector and improve the well-being of the population.
The vice minister also praised the dedication of Cuban electricity workers and the daily challenges they face due to the limitations imposed by the United States’ current unilateral and coercive policy against Cuba.
