After external resistance, World Trade Organization approves renewal of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership for another four years

The World Trade Organization brought forward the reappointment of the current director general for a second term by almost a year, before Donald Trump’s inauguration in the United States. There was no competing candidacy and all 166 WTO members agreed to the reappointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for a second four-year term, to begin in September next year. She was Nigeria’s Finance Minister and made history by becoming the first woman and the first African to lead the entity.

In 2020, then-American President Donald Trump supported a rival candidate and tried to block the Nigerian woman’s election, which was only confirmed by Joe Biden the following year.

Okonjo-Iweala declined to comment on Trump’s promises to increase tariffs on imported goods.

Palestine

The head of the UN Human Rights office for Palestine, Ajith Sunghay, said he was alarmed by the prevalence of hunger in the Gaza Strip after a visit to the territory last Sunday. He once again stated that aid agencies are unable to access northern Gaza, which has been the target of an Israeli offensive since the beginning of October. And that the threat of death from hunger, disease or bombing is real.

South Korea

In South Korea, a UN meeting faces difficulties in defining global rules for the use of plastic. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee brings together 175 countries. A document presented this Friday received criticism from delegates and civil society organizations. Among the proposals is a list of products to be managed and a financial mechanism to help developing countries tackle pollution. But there are no reduction targets for plastic production, contrary to what is required by a proposal that brings together one hundred countries.
