In the last hours, the titles of the agreement that Trump and Milei were negotiating were known. In exchange for the dollars he prints with his own machine, so that the president wins the October elections, it was obvious that there was a reward. These are commercial, mining and all kinds of businesses, which will favor the “master of the North.”

Many talk about Milei himself, the (former) chancellor Werthein or the new one (Pablo Quirno). But there is a key character in the pact. This is the Argentine ambassador to the United States: Alex Oxenford.

For most he is an unknown character, but in La Izquierda Diario we tell you who he is and where he comes from: you will understand more easily why he was chosen as Trump’s employee.

Like Galperín but with more history

Alec Oxenford is like a Marcos Galperín but with a low profile. In fact, he studied at the same school as the owner of Mercado Libre, the exclusive San Andrés. He also went to university in the United States. And also, with the money from his millionaire parents, he founded a company to compete in the juicy business of fintech and electronic commerce.

Coincidences?

Oxenford founded DeRemate (a competitor of Mercado Libre that he later sold to that company), also OLX (classifieds), which he still presides over, and LetGo (mobile market). They are those companies called “unicorns” in the business world, because they are worth more than 1 billion dollars. In addition to the family help, his relationships in the US allowed several investment funds to join the business. Their latest creation is Alpha Capital, which is dedicated to “hunting for funds” to found other companies listed on Wall Street.

Coincidences?

During the last year of Macri’s government, Alec promoted the WhatsApp group “Nuestra Voz” along with other businessmen such as Galperín (ML), Ratazzi (FIAT) and Migoya (Globant). There they dedicated themselves to defending that government. In 2023 it became “Our Voice – Dollarization” to support Milei’s campaign.

But “Alejandrito”, as he calls himself online, has a lot of activity on X (Twitter). There he supports all right-wing measures. In recent months he has published tweets against the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, against “the dictatorship of Venezuela and Cuba”, in favor of the Israeli genocide, in favor of the veto against retirees, against the aeronautical workers in conflict, against the unions, in favor of the Bases Law and for the prison for the protesters, in favor of the labor reform (which coincidentally is now beginning to be discussed again)…

We could continue. But it is clear what “Alejandrito” thinks. It must be recognized that his “ideological coherence” and his “digital militancy” paid off.

An old anti-working class tradition

But Alec’s career goes far beyond “virtuality.” In 2019 he earned the right to be a member of the Argentine Business Association: the cream of the Argentine business community and oligarchy (although its only homeland is business).

Alejandrito only continued a family tradition: his family always held important positions in business chambers. Alejandro, his father, did so as the owner of Sullair, a rather murky story that we already told you. Alec inherited the position.

And as we have already told, it is impossible to understand the history of the Oxenfords today without the “effort” of Don Eduardo Valentín, one of the patriarchs of the family. In March 1976 he was a director of Alpargatas (Bunge y Born company) and a director of the Argentine Business Council together with Martínez de Hoz.

The Bunge and Born were among the main promoters of the dictatorship. Together with other business groups, they called for the employers’ “lock-out” of February 16, 1976, the prelude to the coup. In the different Alpargatas plants (Barracas, Varela, Tucumán) a worker activism had been forged that challenged not only the bosses’ arrogance but also the policies of Isabel’s Peronist government.

According to an investigation, “Eduardo Valentín Oxenford, president of the board of directors of Alpargatas, was an auditor in the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA) during the dictatorship, he was first vice president of the Argentine Business Council, he acted on the board of directors of YPF and the dictator Roberto Viola appointed him as Minister of Industry” (Corporate responsibility in crimes against humanity, CELS, Infojus, Ministry of Human Rights).

Oxenford even forgave the military for a task force kidnapping one of his sons (for money) and then murdering him.

Alpargatas was one of the companies that benefited the most from the nationalization of the debt: 474 million dollars. Many of its workers were persecuted and remain missing. However, they left one of their heroic pages in labor history: a wage strike in the midst of the dictatorship: April 1979.

Oxenford, generation after generation, is another cursed surname in our national history. Today the heirs continue to embrace anti-worker and anti-national policies, to continue amassing fortunes.
