Faced with fears of a possible arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes, Tel Aviv authorities were reportedly working behind the scenes to prevent the International Penal Tribunal (TPI), in The Hague, issues such a request, according to information released by The Times of Israel this Sunday, 28.
According to local media reports, senior levels of the Israeli government are concerned about the real possibility of Netanyahu facing an arrest warrant in The Hague.
A government source in Tel Aviv, who declined to be identified, revealed to the media outlet that “The Hague is currently focused on accusations that Israel deliberately restricted food access to Palestinians in Gaza.”
Therefore, the Israeli government would be committed to “blocking the feared detention orders” that could be issued by the ICC, according to the official source consulted.
Efforts to avoid the possible arrest order were being led by the National Security Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as an Israeli diplomat informed the newspaper, highlighting that “we are acting within our possibilities”.
The Times of Israel also highlighted that the detention orders could extend to other government or Israel Defense Forces officials.
