North American imperialism was key in the dictatorship of 1976-1983. That support had four legs…

1) The political nod. That man is Henry Kissinger. The almighty secretary of state. Since the US had been highly questioned by its defeat in Vietnam and its explicit support for Pinochet and the Chilean dictatorship, it had to continue fighting the uprisings and leftist ideas in Latin America, but taking care of its forms a little. Since January 76 Kisinger knew that the coup was coming and encouraged it. In the first meeting with the military chancellor, Admiral Guzetti, he told him “do what you have to do but quickly.” The ambassador was Robert Hill, a stalwart who had been an intelligence agent and crony of López Rega, who often met with Massera. Then Jimmy Carter changes his policy a little because it was already a scandal. Negotiate the visit of the IACHR but also that it not be so harsh with its report. He invited Videla to the US. But the real power in the US continued to support the genocide. That is why Kissinger came to the 78 World Cup and congratulated Videla for his “fight against terrorism.”

2) Financial banking. That one you see there is David Rockefeller, along with Martínez de Hoz. The minister was a man linked to the Rural and the banks, faithful to neoliberal ideas. A week after the coup, the US obtained a loan that the IMF had denied to Isabel Perón in the midst of the crisis. More credits returned in 1977. But they were not only from international organizations. The large American banks led by Rockefeller continued to lend and do business throughout the dictatorship. It served the United States as a destination for its imports in the midst of the “cold war” and also as a succulent business for its companies.

3) Scam companies. Those are Ford managers. And the oval mark was key to understanding the origin of the genocide. It was a bosses’ coup, which sought to crush the worker and youth insurrection that questioned the economic but also social regime. Ford workers had been part of the interfactory coordinators of the Northern Zone and part of the anti-bureaucratic sectors in many unions. The company handed over those delegates, lent their barbecue to torture them and then disappear them. Citi and Boston did phenomenal business. But many of them also benefited from the nationalization of their private debts that the people paid. Not only those we mentioned before, but also Bank of America, Chasse Manhattan, IBM, Esso and a long list.

4) Military training and support. That’s George W. Bush. The other, Menem. He was director of the CIA that March 24 and one more year. Together with the Pentagon, they provided information, technology and weapons to the dictatorship. But above all two things. They trained the majority of these dictators and torturers at the School of the Americas in Panama where they were prepared to face the “international communist threat” under the National Security Doctrine. They helped organize Plan Cóndor, a transnational repressive structure that coordinated the forces of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay, to persecute, kidnap and assassinate opponents. Part of that coordination was done on Yankee bases.

A military, employer but also imperial coup

Kissinger shared a lot of advice with Trump but was also valued by Democrats. It summarized the meaning of Yankee imperialism: supporting dictators and genocides, justifying war crimes, looting countries, crushing revolutionary movements and every struggle of oppressed peoples.

The American people, on the other hand, often showed solidarity with these causes.

Therefore, this March 24, let us also march against the coup vultures: down with the imperialist war, Trump out of Latin America!
