The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that Washington intends to participate in the process that will define Iran’s next leader. The statement was made in a telephone interview with Reuters this Thursday.

According to Trump, it is still too early to predict who will assume Iranian leadership after the death of supreme leader Ali Khamenei, but he indicated that the United States is closely following the transition of power.

“We want to participate in the process of choosing the person who will lead Iran in the future,” said the American president.

Khamenei’s son would be an unlikely choice

During the interview, Trump also commented on speculation about a possible family succession within the Iranian political system. Among the names mentioned in internal debates would be Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the recently killed supreme leader.

The American president assessed, however, that the nomination of Khamenei’s son would be unlikely at this time. He did not detail which names would be considered most viable to occupy the position.

Political transition in Iran

In the Iranian political system, the supreme leader is the country’s highest authority, concentrating broad religious, military and political powers. The choice of successor is normally made by a clerical body known as the Assembly of Experts.

Ali Khamenei’s death comes amid an escalation of military tensions in the Middle East, following attacks attributed to the United States and Israel against targets in Iranian territory and retaliatory responses from Tehran.

Declaration increases diplomatic tension

Trump’s statement that Washington intends to participate in choosing the next Iranian leader could increase diplomatic tension between the two countries.

Iranian authorities have historically rejected any type of external interference in their internal political processes. So far, the government in Tehran has not officially commented on the American president’s statements.
