China has reaffirmed political support for Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. In a telephone conversation held this Monday (2), Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and reiterated Beijing’s position in defense of Iranian sovereignty.
According to a statement released by the Chinese government, Wang Yi said that China “values traditional Sino-Iranian friendship” and supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and national dignity. The chancellor also declared that Beijing supports Tehran in defending its “legitimate and legal rights and interests”.
During the call, Araghchi gave Wang Yi an update on the regional situation. According to the Iranian report, the United States had launched a new military offensive against Iran during the period of negotiations between the two countries. The Iranian foreign minister stated that the negotiations were registering positive progress, but that US actions would violate international law and exceed “red lines” established by Tehran. Given this, according to him, Iran would have no alternative but to exercise its right to self-defense.
Wang Yi reiterated China’s “principled” position on the current crisis and declared that Beijing has already urged the United States and Israel to immediately cease military operations, avoid further escalation and prevent the conflict from expanding throughout the Middle East.
The head of Chinese diplomacy also stated that he hopes that Iran will maintain internal stability in the face of the scenario considered “serious and complex”, take into account the legitimate concerns of neighboring countries and guarantee the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions on Iranian territory. In response, Araghchi stated that the Iranian government is willing to fully ensure the protection of Chinese personnel and facilities in the country.
