Research shows that only 28% of the British public supports US military action against Iran

A new poll has revealed that British public opinion opposes allowing the US to use British air bases for attacks on Iranian missile sites.

A YouGov poll released on Monday shows the British public opposes US military action against Iran by 49% to 28%.

Exactly half the population also opposes the government allowing the US to use British air bases, with just 30% supporting the move.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Sunday night that the US would be allowed to use British bases to target Iranian missile sites, after having refused to take part in joint US-Israeli strikes when they began on Saturday morning.

Initially, the UK prevented the US from using the joint British and American military base at Diego Garcia, in the Chagos Islands, to attack Iran, a decision said to have been taken after legal advice from Attorney General Lord Richard Hermer.

Just 11% of the public “strongly supports” the US-Israel attack on Iran. That number rises to 17% among conservative voters and 36% among reform voters.

But just five per cent of Labor voters strongly support the attack and 13 per cent support it “somewhat”.

Among Green Party voters, 11% support the strikes and 70% oppose them.

Political opposition to British politics

Reform leader Nigel Farage and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch condemned Starmer for not allowing the US to use British bases for any military action against Iran it wishes to take, rather than just attacking missile sites.

Badenoch also claimed on Monday that the Labor Party’s policy is beholden to Muslim voters, following the party’s defeat to the Greens in the Gorton and Denton by-election last week.

She said that “particularly after last week’s by-election, the Labor government is too scared to say what is obvious to the rest of us”.

“In cities and towns across Britain, there are large blocs of voters – who the Labor Party considers its voters – whose political allegiances are influenced by conflicts in the Middle East rather than the British national interest.”

Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat Party leader Ed Davey and Green Party leader Zack Polanski asked Starmer to put the UK’s decision to allow the US to use its military bases to a vote in Parliament, which did not happen.

Polanski called on Starmer to reverse his decision to grant the US permission to use British bases, calling the United States a “rogue state”.

On Sunday, Starmer said in a Downing Street address that the only way to stop the Iranian missile threat “is to destroy the missiles at source, in their depots or at the launchers used to fire them.”

“The United States has requested permission to use British bases for this specific and limited defensive purpose,” he said.

“We took the decision to accept this request to stop Iran launching missiles across the region, killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk and hitting countries that are not involved.”
