This Wednesday (4), Iranians will participate in the farewell ceremony for the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed over the weekend during the military escalation involving the United States and Israel. The event is scheduled for 10pm (local time) at the Musalla Imam Khomeini mosque in Tehran, according to Iranian state media.
According to authorities, the ceremony will last three days. The funeral procession will be announced at the end of the religious tributes. Images released by official vehicles show supporters gathered in the capital in vigils and acts of mourning since the death was announced.
Khamenei died after a series of attacks that began on Saturday (28), when American and Israeli forces launched bombings against Iranian targets, amid tensions related to the country’s nuclear program. On Sunday, state media confirmed that the supreme leader was among the victims.
After confirming the death, the Iranian government raised its tone against Washington and Tel Aviv. President Masoud Pezeshkian declared that Iran considers retaliating for the attacks as a “legitimate right and duty.” The country also threatened to launch what it called the “heaviest offensive” in its history.
In response, American President Donald Trump warned Tehran against any retaliation, stating that, if this occurs, the United States will react “with strength never seen before”. Hostilities continue in the region, with exchanges of threats and attacks recorded since the start of the offensive.
