The CEO of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Børge Brende, is resigning from his position after documents from the Epstein dossier emerged. It shows that in 2018 and 2019 he made arrangements to meet controversial financier Jeffrey Epstein at his home in New York. The WEF previously completed an internal investigation. Yet Brende now chooses to leave.

Documents show planned meetings with Epstein

The fuss started after a new set of documents from the American Epstein dossier became public. It turned out that Brende had planned several meetings with Jeffrey Epstein. Brende was previously Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway and has been CEO of the WEF since 2017.

Epstein was arrested in 2019 on suspicion of sexual abuse and human trafficking. Later that year he died in his cell.

Brende previously stated that he was completely ignorant of Epstein’s past and criminal activities. However, he admitted that he should have done more careful research. The WEF then launched an internal investigation.

According to WEF presidents Andre Hoffmann and Larry Fink, no new concerns have emerged beyond what was already known. Nevertheless, Brende chooses to leave.

Brende leaves after eight years

Despite the outcome of the investigation, Brende has decided to resign from his position. In a statement, he said he was doing this “after careful consideration.” He does not mention Epstein or the internal investigation.

Brende was CEO of the WEF for more than eight years. Swiss businessman Alois Zwinggi has been appointed as interim director until a successor is found.

WEF loses another top director

The departure comes at a time when the WEF has been under pressure for a long time. Founder Klaus Schwab previously stepped down after accusations of financial mismanagement. After investigation he was exonerated. The annual summit in Davos took place for the first time this year without Schwab at the helm.

Brende is not the only prominent Norwegian in the Epstein documents. Previously, revelations about former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, among others, caused public outrage in Norway.
