On February 25, the Cuban Ministry of the Interior published a statement announcing that “in the morning hours” today, “an offending speedboat was detected within Cuban territorial waters with the registration number of Florida, United States (…)”. The statement adds that “When a surface unit of the Border Guard Troops of the Ministry of the Interior approached, with five combatants, for identification, fire was opened from the offending boat on the Cuban troops, causing the commander of the Cuban boat to be injured.” The Ministry of the Interior continued to report that “as a result of the confrontation (…) four attackers were killed and six injured, who were evacuated and received medical assistance.”
For its part, as of 3:30 pm in Havana, the United States government has not made any statement, no Cuban-American anti-communist group has claimed action, nor is there momentarily an unofficial version of the events.
In the current situation of crisis, an infiltration attempt by a terrorist group from the United States is an open provocation that could serve as an excuse for Donald Trump to tighten his sanctions against Havana. Remember that this week, the United States lifted the tariffs that would be applied against countries that sold fuel to Cuba. This fact could be taken advantage of by the US government to even take other types of retaliation. We also remember that this lifting of sanctions may be due to underground negotiations between the Cuban government and the United States, the results of which we do not yet know.
Yesterday in the “Address to the Union” that American presidents usually make before the legislative body, Trump did not mention Cuba even once. From Communist Cuba we condemn this terrorist incursion into Cuban territorial waters and warn that it is an act of extreme danger with evident ulterior motives. We call to continue to be aware of events and without losing critical guidance, to close ranks against Donald Trump’s escalation of aggression against Cuba.
