The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Thursday (19) that he intends to close a “meaningful” agreement with Iran and warned that there will be severe consequences if the negotiations fail. The statements were made during the opening of the first meeting of the Peace Council, in Washington, according to the newspaper Economic Value.
According to the report, Trump said negotiations were underway and pressured Tehran to support diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. “Good negotiations are happening. We need to reach a meaningful agreement, otherwise bad things will happen,” he declared. He added that he could decide within ten days whether or not to authorize an offensive against the country. “Maybe we’ll make a deal [com Teerã]. You’ll probably find out over the next ten days,” he said.
Diplomatic pressure and military threat
During the speech, Trump also highlighted the reinforcement of the American military presence in the Middle East, classifying the mobilization as the largest since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. According to him, the sending of B-2 bombers to Iranian territory in June last year, during the 12-day war initiated by Israel, would have resulted in the neutralization of Iran’s nuclear program. “It completely decimated the country’s nuclear potential,” he said.
The president reiterated that Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons. “They can’t have a nuclear weapon. It’s very simple. They can’t have it. You can’t have peace in the Middle East if they have a nuclear weapon,” he declared. At another point, he signaled uncertainty about the next steps: “Now maybe we have to go a step further or maybe not.”
Negotiations continue in Geneva
Despite the threatening tone, diplomatic dialogue remains active. On Tuesday (17), representatives from both countries met in Geneva to try to contain the escalation of the crisis. The meeting was attended by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as well as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. According to reports, both sides recognized limited progress in negotiations.
Washington demands that Tehran halt its nuclear program and limit the development of ballistic missiles. The Iranian government maintains that uranium enrichment is exclusively for energy purposes and denies any intention to produce nuclear weapons.
Military exercises and regional tension
While negotiations progress slowly, the United States maintains military pressure in the region. Iran carried out joint exercises with Russia and China and partially closed the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route through which a significant portion of the oil transported worldwide passes.
International relations experts assess that the current scenario combines two simultaneous strategies: military pressure to increase American bargaining power and maintenance of diplomatic channels to avoid direct confrontation. The ten-day deadline mentioned by Trump is seen as a sign of urgency, but also as a political instrument to accelerate concessions.
Uncertain scenario
The impasse occurs in a context of prolonged rivalry between Washington and Tehran, marked by economic sanctions, regional disputes and disagreements over nuclear security. The possibility of a quick military decision raises international tension, especially between allied countries and energy markets that depend on stability in the Persian Gulf.
At the end of his speech, Trump once again insisted on the need for understanding. “Now is the time for Iran to join us on a path of peace,” he said. Already aboard Air Force One, he reinforced the warning that “really bad things” could happen if there is no agreement, adding that the United States will reach an understanding “one way or another”.
Analysts note that the next few days will be decisive in determining whether the conflict will follow the diplomatic route or whether it will move towards a new cycle of clashes, with direct impacts on regional security and the global economy.
