Iran denied this Monday (2) having received any “ultimatum” from the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to sign a new nuclear agreement, but confirmed that it had determined to begin negotiations with Washington. The information was released by Iranian authorities amid an attempt to reduce the escalation of tensions between the two countries.

At a press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated that Tehran remains willing to take the diplomatic route, but rejects direct pressure. According to him, the country “acts honestly and seriously in diplomatic processes”, but “never accepts ultimatums”.

Despite public denial of any US imposition, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian formally ordered the start of negotiations with the US government, according to the state agency Fars. A government source confirmed that the negotiations will focus primarily on Iran’s nuclear program.

The decision comes after days of increased pressure from Washington. Trump intensified his speech against Tehran, once again demanded limits on the country’s nuclear program and authorized the sending of more than ten warships to the Middle East. The Iranian regime, led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, responded by stating that any military attack would be interpreted as the start of a war.

Baghaei also said he expected the format of the negotiations to be defined in the coming days and confirmed that Arab countries act as mediators in the exchange of messages between Tehran and Washington. According to him, initial points have already been discussed and the final details on method and format are being finalized.

Regional mediation has been seen as a key element for resuming dialogue, especially given the climate of mutual distrust. Iranian authorities avoid commenting on the content of the preliminary talks, but indicate that the priority is to establish a diplomatic channel capable of containing new military threats.

On Sunday (1), Trump said he was “optimistic” about the possibility of an agreement, although he maintained a warning tone by saying that, if negotiations fail, “something could happen”. The declaration reinforced the strategy of combining military pressure with signs of diplomatic openness.

According to the semi-official Tasnim agency, there is a possibility that negotiations will begin in the coming days, although the date and location have not been defined. The talks, according to Iranian government sources, could involve Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi and Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
