The collective crypto interest of Dutch people has increased explosively in recent years. This is evident from new figures from De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), which were published today in De Telegraaf. The central bank is concerned and warns again about the risks of crypto investments.
Dutch people invest 1.2 billion euros in crypto
According to DNB, crypto-related investments by Dutch households have increased from 81 million to 1.2 billion euros since 2020. This does not concern direct ownership of crypto coins such as Bitcoin (BTC), but shares and funds that follow the crypto market.
It is striking that private investors are mainly responsible for this increase. Together they have invested almost 400 million euros in these products. In addition, Dutch pension funds also invest, especially in companies with crypto assets, such as miners or companies with large crypto reserves.
In 2025, they alone invested 287 million euros in such companies. Private individuals followed with 243 million euros. We already saw in the news at the end of November that Dutch people are increasingly investing.
Bitcoin price and appreciation drive growth
According to DNB, the growth is mainly due to the increase in the value of crypto coins such as BTC, and not to a large influx of new capital. In recent years, the Dutch have sold 45 million euros more than they bought in crypto investments. Yet the total value has increased significantly.
The majority of Dutch capital is in just seven investment products. These largely come from the United States and Sweden, which increases the risk of foreign dependence.
Direct crypto ownership remains minimal
Despite the increase, direct crypto ownership in the Netherlands is still limited. By the end of the third quarter of 2025, Dutch investment funds and financial intermediaries had jointly invested 113 million euros in cryptocurrencies. Banks and pension funds will stay away from this for the time being. Possibly because they recognize the risks that DNB previously warned about.
The central bank emphasizes that cryptocurrencies can still fluctuate significantly in value. “Investments can rise sharply, but they can also fall just as fast,” says DNB. The regulator previously stated that crypto is “not real money”.
