The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated in a letter sent to the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Störe, that he no longer feels obliged to “think purely about peace” after not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. In the document, revealed by the Reuters agency, the republican once again defended the US taking control of Greenland and questioned Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory.
According to Reuters, the letter was written in response to a joint message sent by Störe and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. In the text, European leaders criticized Trump’s decision to threaten allies with trade tariffs if they do not accept the incorporation of Greenland by the United States.
“Considering that your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing more than eight wars, I no longer feel obligated to think purely about peace, even though it remains predominant. I can now think about what is good and appropriate for the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
In a statement, Störe reiterated that he has repeatedly informed the American president that the Norwegian Nobel Committee is independent and that the Norwegian government has no influence on the awarding of the prize.
Trump has openly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded last year to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Last week, Machado symbolically presented his gold medal to the American president during a meeting at the White House. The Nobel Committee, however, stated that the prize cannot be transferred, shared or revoked.
In the letter, Trump once again questioned Danish sovereignty over Greenland. According to him, Denmark would not be able to protect the island from external threats. “Denmark cannot protect this land from Russia or China, and why would they have a ‘property right’ anyway?” he wrote.
The American president also downplayed the historical foundations of the Danish inauguration. “There are no written documents. It is only known that a boat docked there hundreds of years ago. We also had boats docking there,” he said.
Trump further argued that international security depends on American control over the mineral-rich and strategic Arctic island in the Arctic. “The world will not be safe unless we have total and complete control of Greenland,” he said.
Greenland is an autonomous territory that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
At the end of the letter, Trump once again demanded reciprocity from NATO. “I have done more for NATO than anyone else since its founding, and now NATO should do something for the United States. The world will not be safe without complete and total control of Greenland,” he concluded, signing off as “President DJT.”
