The number of deaths has risen to 39, as confirmed to Europa Press sources from the Ministry of the Interior, after the derailment recorded around 7:45 p.m. this Sunday, January 18, of an Iryo 6189 train carrying around 300 people and covering the Málaga-Puerta de Atocha route, which occurred at the entrance detours to track 1 of the Adamuz station (Córdoba), which caused the vehicle to invade the adjacent track.

In addition, there have been 152 injured people who have been transferred to receive medical attention, five very serious, 24 serious – all of them hospitalized – and 123 in various conditions. This is the latest update on the victims after the serious accident that occurred this Sunday in the Córdoba town of Adamuz.

As this newspaper has learned, of the 39 confirmed deaths, 31 bodies have already been extracted by rescue operations. In addition, eight have been located by firefighters. There are at least six deceased people from the Iryo car this morning. The rest are on the affected Alvia trains.

Operations have been working in the area since 8:00 p.m. this Sunday with temperatures below zero and in very difficult conditions. The area where the trains have fallen is muddy and complicates the work.

Early this Monday they were waiting for the arrival of heavy machinery to be able to lift the overturned wagons (Alvia) and finish extracting the rest of the victims. It is estimated that there will be more victims.

Complex work

From the scene of the accident, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, reported this morning that the emergency teams will continue working throughout the night to recover bodies, a complex task due to the serious deterioration of some carriages.

“Some carriages have been left in a very deteriorated, very unfortunate situation. They tell me that it is a mass of iron, which is very difficult. We have to use mechanical means and heavy machinery,” he expressed before calling it “probable” that the number of fatalities will rise. Moreno has also reported that 16 forensic doctors will carry out the work of identifying the bodies from the Institute of Legal Medicine of Córdoba in order to certify the deaths and inform their families.

The Railway Infrastructure Administrator (Adif) has reported the derailment of two high-speed trains in the municipality of Adamuz (Córdoba) around 7:45 p.m. this Sunday.

The accident is strange, on a straight line and everyone is really surprised. It is very strange and difficult to explain,” he added.

The Italian capital group Iryo itself issued a statement early on Monday ensuring that the train that derailed had its last inspection just four days ago. The company indicates that it is at the complete disposal of the Commission in charge of investigating the accident and will collaborate fully, providing all the information they require.
