The singer Julio Iglesias has reacted to the accusations of two former employees of sexual assault revealed in an investigation by elDiario.es in collaboration with Univisión Noticias and which are part of a complaint against the singer presented to the Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court. Three days after this complaint became known, the artist issued a brief statement through his social networks to break his silence and deny the accusations. “I deny having abused, coerced or disrespected any woman,” the brief note states. elDiario.es and Univision Noticias had repeatedly addressed Iglesias and his lawyer without obtaining any response to their questions to date.
“With deep regret, I respond to the accusations made by two people who previously worked in my house,” begins a statement in which he attempts to defend himself. “I have never felt such evil, but I still have the strength to let people know the whole truth and defend my dignity in the face of such a serious grievance,” he emphasizes.
Two women have reported that Julio Iglesias sexually assaulted them when they worked for the singer internally in his mansions in the Caribbean. A domestic service employee reports that she was pressured to have sexual encounters with Julio Iglesias and describes penetrations, slaps, and physical and verbal harassment. She and a fellow physical therapist say that, in addition to being touched, they received insults and humiliation during their work day, in an environment of control and continuous harassment. The events, according to those interviewed, occurred in 2021. The youngest was 22 years old at the time. In the exclusive investigation by elDiario.es and Univisión Noticias, abundant documentation has been reviewed and corroborated with former employees.
The Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court has received the complaint from the two former workers in which the singer is accused of six crimes related to sexual violence, labor exploitation and even human trafficking. The complaint points to the existence of a crime of trafficking in human beings for the purpose of imposing forced labor or services and servitude, foreseen and punishable by between five and eight years in prison. Furthermore, the complainants consider that aggravating factors of danger to the integrity of the complainants may occur, given their vulnerable situation; as well as a criminal group, since in this case the complaint points to Iglesias as the main author of the events, but includes two people in charge of the singer’s homes in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas as collaborators.
In addition to trafficking and the criminal group, the complaint includes the concurrence of other crimes. Among them, several related to sexual freedom and indemnity stand out, including sexual assaults. These crimes obey the penal code prior to the reform of the law of only yes means yes. Added to them is a crime of sexual harassment. The complaint also deepens the concurrence of crimes against workers’ rights.
The Prosecutor’s Office has reported that it will take statements from the complainants as protected witnesses.
Julio Iglesias’ statement concludes by thanking those who have supported him since the content of these accusations became known on Tuesday. “I can’t forget so many dear people who have sent me messages of love and loyalty,” he says. To date, only a few people around him had reacted publicly to this information with arguments such as that “he has never had the need to abuse.”
