Israel approved law prohibiting the activities of 37 humanitarian organizations

Israeli bombers and shootings in the Gaza Strip have killed more than 100 children since the beginning of October last year, when the supposed truce between Israel and Hamas was signed.

“[O número representa] approximately one boy or girl killed every day. During a ‘ceasefire’”, said the spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), James Elder, in a video published this Tuesday (13).

The ‘ceasefire’ in the region was signed between the Tel Aviv government and Hamas on October 9, with the mediation of the United States (USA).

“Since the ceasefire, Unicef has recorded reports of at least 60 boys and 40 girls killed in the Gaza Strip. The figure of 100 reflects only those incidents where there were enough details to be recorded, so the true number of Palestinian children killed is likely higher. Hundreds of children were injured,” Elder added.

Speaking directly from Gaza, the Unicef spokesperson appears next to the 9-year-old boy Abid Al Rahman, hit by bomb shrapnel in Khan Younis, in the south of the Palestinian territory.

“I was collecting firewood and plastics when a missile fell near me and a thick piece of shrapnel flew straight into my eye. Now I can no longer see out of my eye,” said Abid, who still has the fragment of metal lodged in his face.

Restrictions

Unicef also denounces that the region remains under severe restrictions on access to medical supplies, cooking gas, fuel and repair parts for water and sewage systems.

On the other hand, the UN organization recognizes that progress was made for the population during the ceasefire, with the expansion of health services, including immunization, and repairs to water pipes and sewage stations and networks, “all thanks to Palestinian ingenuity, and not to the entry of permitted spare parts”.

“And in the area of nutrition, we added more than 70 food distribution centers in Gaza. Hunger has reduced,” said the Unicef spokesperson.

On the other hand, the Israeli Armed Forces claim that Palestinian groups are violating the ceasefire, which would lead to responses from the military.

Hamas accuses Israel of pursuing a policy of genocide against the Palestinian people, mainly by blocking the entry of humanitarian aid.

Humanitarian organizations

At the end of December, Israel’s parliament passed a law to ban 37 humanitarian aid organizations from operating in the Gaza Strip, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The reason would be the fact that these organizations refuse to pass on data from Palestinian employees to Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

Doctors Without Borders says this violates employees’ privacy and puts them at risk.

“MSF has legitimate concerns regarding the requirement for registration that personal information of our Palestinian staff be shared with Israeli authorities, compounded by the fact that 15 MSF colleagues were killed by Israeli forces,” the organization said in a statement.

Israel also ordered, last month, the cutting of water, electricity and energy and communications at the facilities of these organizations, which also include the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).

The measure led UN Secretary-General António Guterrres to warn Netanyahu’s government that the UN could take Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) due to these actions.

UNRWA had already been banned from operating in the territories occupied by Israel in October 2024. The Israeli government alleges that the agency employed Hamas militants, but did not provide evidence to an independent investigation created to investigate the accusations.

UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini condemned the new Israeli measures, saying they “are part of a worrying pattern of disregard for international humanitarian law and increasing obstacles to aid operations.”

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, accused the UN of trying to “intimidate” Israel with threats of taking the country to international courts.

“Instead of addressing the serious issue of UNRWA officials’ involvement in terrorism, [a ONU] is trying to cover up crimes committed by UNRWA, which acts as a subsidiary of Hamas.”
