American President Donald Trump is again in the news with a remarkable plan. He would seriously consider adding Greenland, a territory of more than 2.1 million square kilometers, to the United States. Although this idea was previously dismissed as a joke or diversion, Trump now appears to be actually taking steps. The approach raises many questions internationally. A military invasion seems to be out of the question for the time being, but according to sources in Washington, serious consideration is being given to an economic takeover.
The US is considering a takeover via a multi-million dollar offer
Trump and his team are currently considering a proposal to purchase Greenland. It would not be the first time that the United States has tried to push through such a plan. In the 19th century, the Americans bought Louisiana from France and later Alaska from Russia. Greenland has also been in the picture for some time. In the past, the US made two attempts to take over the island. The first broke down during negotiations. The second failed, despite an offer of $100 million.
This time, Trump would like to focus on a broader offer and direct financial incentives for the local population. According to sources, residents of Greenland would be offered amounts between 10,000 and 100,000 dollars per person. The hope is to gain local support for the takeover plan. The question, however, is whether the population will be seduced.
Political Obstacles Within the US
Even if Greenlanders prove receptive to the financial promise, there are still significant obstacles. First of all, the American president will have to release a budget for the purchase. For this he needs permission from both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
That support seems far away at the moment. The economic situation in the United States is precarious. There is a divided political climate. The question is whether Congress wants to release money for a plan that is causing tensions worldwide.
NATO and Denmark react with concern
Concern about Trump’s plans is growing within the international community. US troops recently kidnapped Venezuela’s head of state under the guise of drug smuggling. That action fueled the image of an unpredictable America, something that partners within NATO view with suspicion.
Tensions are increasing now that it appears that Trump wants to use Greenland strategically for national security. According to him, the island would occupy a key position in the defense of the American continent. Denmark and Greenland have now made it clear that the territory is not for sale. Yet fears remain that if negotiations fail, the US will consider other means.
A military takeover is currently considered unlikely. But Trump’s previous statements do not rule out such a step. If it does happen, NATO will feel compelled to intervene. In that case, an ally’s territory is entered without permission.
Polymarket sees increasing chances of takeover
On the betting platform Polymarket, confidence is increasing that Trump will actually succeed. Users can bet money on future events there. In December, the chance of a successful takeover was still estimated at seven percent. This has now risen to sixteen percent. Two days ago, the forecast even briefly peaked at 37 percent.
The bet on the platform is about whether the United States will actually acquire (part of) Greenland in 2026. The coming months will reveal whether Trump will actually implement this plan. He will probably first focus on negotiations. If they fail, the question is whether he is willing to give up his ambition.
