A US military operation this Saturday involved attacks in the capital Caracas and the alleged capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro; Secretary-General of the United Nations highlights deep concern about disrespect for rules of international law.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was “deeply alarmed” by the escalation of tensions between the United States and Venezuela, which culminated in US military action on Venezuelan territory this Saturday.
According to news agencies, the operation resulted in the alleged capture of the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, by American special forces.
Disregard for international law
United States President Donald Trump announced on social media that the Venezuelan leader and his wife had been taken out of the country.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi said Maduro and his wife will face “the full fury of American justice on American soil, in American courts,” based on a 2020 indictment.
The UN leader stated in a statement that “regardless of the situation in Venezuela, these events constitute a dangerous precedent”.
Guterres emphasized the importance of all sides practicing full respect for international law, including the UN Charter. He said he was deeply concerned that “the rules of international law were not respected.”
The head of the United Nations called on all actors in Venezuela to engage in an inclusive dialogue, with full respect for human rights and the rule of law.
Escalation of tensions
The US operation began with night raids in and around the capital Caracas. Venezuela declared a state of national emergency. The number of victims and the extent of the damage have not yet been confirmed.
According to news agencies, the Venezuelan government denounced the act of “extremely serious military aggression”, which occurred after months of increasing tension, including an increase in the US military presence on the coast of Venezuela and a series of attacks against vessels allegedly linked to drug trafficking. In recent weeks, the US has ordered the seizure of oil tankers and signaled that it could launch land operations.
Venezuela formally requested the Security Council to meet in an emergency session in New York.
