The notarial record with the WhatsApp messages sent by Carlos Mazón to Alberto Núñez Feijóo confirms that the former lied in the investigation commission of the Congress of Deputies about the time he learned that there had been deaths as a result of the dana of October 29, 2024.
Mazón stated that “until five in the morning the next day” he did not know that there had been deaths due to drowning. However, the then president of the Generalitat wrote to the leader of the PP a message at 11:25 p.m. in which he indicated: “We have not made it public yet. [sic] but dead people are already appearing in Utiel and many more are going to appear.” “This is going to be a fucking disaster, presi,” Mazón added. A minute later, at 11:26 p.m., the head of the Consell added: “There are going to be dozens [de fallecidos] safe.”
The damage claimed 230 fatalities. The former president of the Generalitat, currently a regional deputy of the PP with the status of a qualified person, tried to distance the confirmation that there were deaths from the time of his late arrival at the meeting of the Integrated Operational Coordination Center (Cecopi), by having extended the controversial meal and after-dinner meal at the El Ventorro restaurant with Maribel Vilaplana.
Despite the fact that in the same meeting, even before the arrival of Carlos Mazón to take command, the chief inspector of the Provincial Firefighters Consortium, José Miguel Basset, reported that his troops had found a body in Utiel, as declared on December 17 by the deputy director general of Emergencies, Jorge Suárez.
Carlos Mazón himself said at midnight that he could confirm that there were “lifeless bodies.” However, he refused to provide more information since it was not possible to transmit official confirmation to the relatives and given the situation of chaos and lack of information about the terrain that the Cecopi was dragging.
The Penal Code, as Compromís recalled, on the occasion of Mazón’s appearance, indicates: “If the person summoned before a parliamentary investigation commission is untrue in his testimony, he will be punished with a prison sentence of six months to one year or a fine of 12 to 24 months.” The formation was studying legal actions against Mazón.
Feijóo “lied”, according to the victims
Alberto Núñez Feijóo sent the WhatsApp messages to the Dana judge a few hours before Christmas Eve, a fact that has outraged the spokesperson for the victims’ association that exercises one of the accusations in the procedure and requested the testimony of the PP leader in the context of the case. Rosa Álvarez, president of the Association of Mortal Victims dana 29O, considers that Feijóo “lied” and constructed a “false story” to “provide an alibi for Mazón and the Consell, which the judge has been dismantling,” as reported by elDiario.es.
He also misses the WhatsApp messages sent by Alberto Núñez Feijóo to Carlos Mazón (only those of his interlocutor were included in the notarial record sent to the magistrate).
