Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip continued to leave victims even after the signing of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and according to the Palestinian-controlled Ministry of Health, at least 405 people have died since the truce came into effect on October 10. The information was released this Sunday (21), when hospitals in the region received the bodies of another 12 victims, four of them recently killed and eight removed from under the rubble caused by previous destruction.
According to the health agency, since the beginning of the ceasefire, 1,115 people have been injured as a result of the attacks. Israeli forces maintain a presence in part of the territory, controlling around 54% of the Gaza Strip, even after the withdrawal of troops to a demarcated area known as the “yellow line”. Along these lines, Israeli soldiers continue to shoot almost daily at Palestinians they consider “suspects”, despite the formal truce.
Previous attacks and military operations have left much of the territory devastated and many bodies remain under the rubble, preventing a complete count of victims. According to the most recent report from Palestinian authorities, the total number of deaths since Israel began its military offensive in response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 has already exceeded 70,000 Palestinians, with 171,000 injured, including women and children, many of whom suffered amputations and permanent injuries.
Israel’s offensive began after an attack by the Hamas group that resulted in around 1,200 deaths on both sides and dozens of hostages taken at the start of the conflict two years ago, in October 2023. Israeli military campaigns have been widely criticized internationally because of the humanitarian impact in Gaza, where the population faces marked difficulties in accessing basic aid, including food, water and health services.
Despite the ceasefire, episodes of violence continued to be reported by health organizations and civilian groups within the Gaza Strip in the following months, as Palestinian officials and international news agencies note that isolated clashes and gunfire persist in areas close to the line demarcated between Israeli forces and Hamas-controlled territories. This context contributes to the humanitarian situation in the region remaining in a state of serious alert.
