Investigators are examining the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services in an attack that killed a member of the Russian General Staff.
A Russian General Staff officer died this Monday (22/12) in a car explosion in southern Moscow, the Russian Investigative Committee reported.
The committee confirmed the opening of an investigation into the “assassination” of 56-year-old Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the General Staff’s operational training department, adding that an explosive device placed under a vehicle was detonated on a Moscow street and that Sarvarov “did not survive the injuries” sustained in the explosion.
Investigators are examining several possible motives for the murder, including the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services, according to committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko.
Attacks against Russian leadership
Since the start of the large-scale Russian offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, Kiev has been repeatedly accused of carrying out targeted attacks against prominent figures and military leaders in Russia and Moscow-occupied areas of Ukraine.
In April, another high-ranking Russian military officer, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy chief of the General Staff’s main operational department, was killed by an explosive device placed in his car, parked near his building on the outskirts of Moscow. A suspect was quickly arrested.
Last February, pro-Russian paramilitary leader Armen Sarkisyan was killed during an explosion in a luxury apartment building in Moscow.
In December 2024, Igor Kirillov, commander of Russia’s radiological, chemical and biological defense forces, was killed by the explosion of an explosive-laden electric scooter in the Russian capital.
Russian President Vladimir Putin at the time described Kirillov’s murder as a “big mistake” by Russian security agencies, noting that they should learn from it and improve their efficiency.
The murder was claimed by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). A man from Uzbekistan was quickly arrested and accused of killing Kirillov at the behest of the SBU.
In April 2023, Russian military blogger Maxim Fomin was killed due to a figurine explosion in a Saint Petersburg cafe. In August 2022, a car bomb killed Daria Dugina, daughter of ultranationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin.
