Maricá City Hall announces that, from January 5, 2026, all municipal vans will be free, expanding access to public transport in several neighborhoods

Maricá City Hall, through the Public Transport Company (EPT), will expand the Zero Tariff program with the inclusion of completely free municipal vans. The announcement was made by Mayor Washington Quaquá on Wednesday night (10/12). From January 5, 2026, anyone will be able to use the vans without paying a ticket, without needing to register or have a Mumbuca Transport Card.

“16 years ago, vans in Maricá were prohibited from entering the city. Now, we are going to introduce the Zero Tariff van, just as we did with the buses. Going forward, the objective is to have an electric fleet. But, from January onwards, the vans will be free”, stated Quaquá.

The initiative also foresees the future transition to an electric fleet, consolidating Maricá as a national reference in sustainable and inclusive mobility / Reproduction

The measure follows the model already consolidated with the Vermelhinhos buses, which have been running free of charge for 11 years and have become a national reference in urban mobility. The pioneering policy guarantees direct savings for the population, strengthens local commerce and facilitates access to work, education and public services, making it today one of the largest Zero Tariff systems in the country.

With the change, Maricá now has three completely free municipal modes (buses, bicycles and vans), expanding the reach of public transport, especially in neighborhoods where vans are the main transportation alternative. The City Hall also projects future advances, with the transition to an electric fleet.
