Donald Trump confirmed this Sunday (30) that he spoke on the phone with Nicolás Maduro, reigniting speculation about a possible meeting between the two leaders and bringing new layers to the already delicate military and diplomatic scenario involving Washington and Caracas.

The revelation came from New York Timeswho reported that the conversation took place the previous weekend. Questioned during a flight on Air Force One, Trump admitted the connection, but avoided any details:

“I don’t want to comment on that. The answer is yes,” said the president. “I wouldn’t say it was good or bad. It was a phone call”, he added. According to sources heard by NOWTrump and Maduro discussed the possibility of a meeting in the United States, although no agenda was agreed upon.

The conversation preceded the entry into force of the State Department measure that classified the Los Soles Cartel as a foreign terrorist organization. The US accuses Maduro of leading the criminal group.

At the same time, the Venezuelan president reaffirmed his readiness for a “face to face” meeting with Trump. The Republican, however, urged caution when pressed about the possibility of imminent military actions: “Don’t draw conclusions about that.”

High-ranking sources stated, on condition of anonymity, that drug trafficking is not the only objective of the operation. Maduro’s removal from power would be on the horizon — although not officially declared.

On Thursday (27), Trump anticipated that a ground offensive in Venezuelan territory should take place “very soon”, without detailing the plan. Recent reports indicate that the White House is evaluating different military alternatives for Venezuelan territory.

The Venezuelan government once again accused Washington of pursuing regime change and classified the designation of the Los Soles Cartel as a terrorist group as “ridiculous.” Maduro denies any connection with the criminal organization.
