The Army is investigating the case, stating that the targets were members of a terrorist network wanted for throwing explosives and shooting at security forces.
Images shown on Palestinian television this Thursday (27/11) showed Israeli security forces shooting at two men who appeared to be surrendering unarmed. The case would have happened during an operation in the West Bank.
The two men appear leaving a building surrounded by armed Israeli forces, in the city of Jenin, lifting their shirts and lying on the ground, in an apparent gesture of surrender. Israeli officers then appear to order the men back into the building before opening fire at close range.
A Reuters team nearby saw the men leave the building and, after hearing gunshots, reported seeing Israeli forces next to what appeared to be a lifeless body.
Israel investigates the case
Palestinian authorities stated that the two men died after the shooting, identifying them as Montasir Abdullah, 26, and Yusuf Asasa, 37. In turn, the Israeli Army and Police announced the opening of an investigation.
“The forces entered the area, surrounded the structure where the suspects were and began a surrender procedure that lasted several hours. After using engineering tools on the structure, the two suspects left,” the corporations said in a statement.
The governor of Jenin, Kamal Abu al-Rub, stated that Israeli forces carried out a “cold-blooded execution”, calling for the officers involved to be held accountable.
Israeli forces were carrying out an operation in the Jenin region to capture individuals wanted for “terrorist activities, including throwing explosives and shooting at security forces,” according to the joint Army and Police statement.
The two men shot were wanted and were believed to be linked to a local terrorist network, the document continued. The charges pending against them were not specified, nor was any evidence presented of their alleged connection to a terrorist network.
“Terrorists must die”, says minister
Israel’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is part of the ultra-right wing of the government, offered support to the Army and the police unit involved. “The fighters acted exactly as expected of them — terrorists must die!” he wrote on the X social network.
The operation in Jenin marks the latest episode in an Israeli campaign that has been taking place for months in cities in the northern West Bank. On Wednesday, Israeli forces launched an operation in the nearby city of Tubas.
The Palestinian group Hamas — considered terrorist by the United States, the European Union and others — did not claim the two men as members.
