Strategy has already raised $21 billion in capital by 2025. But this is no coincidence. The company adjusted its financing strategy this year with an emphasis on so-called preference shares. With the proceeds, the company continues to invest in Bitcoin (BTC) at a rapid pace.

Growing role for preferred shares

A company statement shows that Strategy has raised $20.8 billion through various instruments so far in 2025: $11.9 billion in common stock, $6.9 billion in preferred stock and $2.0 billion in convertible debt. This mix marks a marked change from 2024, when the company raised $22.6 billion, almost entirely through common stock and convertible debt.

The preference shares were newly introduced in 2025 as a substantial form of financing. But what exactly are these new preferred shares?

These are a type of shares that give shareholders priority in profit distributions and in the event of liquidation of the company. Unlike ordinary shares, these preference shares do not provide voting rights, but do provide a fixed dividend payment. This makes them attractive to investors looking for stable returns. Strategy thus attracts capital without direct dilution of the normal shares.

Strategy raised capital through the following preferred shares, each with a different ticker: $1.18 billion in STRF, $2.68 billion in STRC, $0.71 billion in STRE, $1.25 billion in STRK and $1.07 billion in STRD.

Focused on Bitcoin and institutional investors

Strategy is the largest institutional holder of Bitcoin in the world with approximately 650 thousand BTC on its balance sheet. The company is actively using capital markets to expand its Bitcoin (BTC) reserves. The company, led by Bitcoin maximalist Michael Saylor, is the pioneer among companies when it comes to purchasing Bitcoin.

Although the year is not yet over, capital raised in 2025 is already close to 2024’s total. If this pace continues, the company will surpass its previous record.
