Trump backs down and signals cooperation with Mamdani

The meeting between Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani broke the logic of polarization and opened space for a debate focused on the cost of living and the urgent demands of the population

However, the unexpected meeting between President Donald Trump and the newly elected democratic socialist mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, injects a dose of refreshing pragmatism into the system. This is not just a handshake between adversaries; it is a tactical and necessary recognition of the centrality of the everyday life of the working class, a point that, paradoxically, seems to be the only one capable of forcing the Republican leader to back down from his threats of retaliation.

A victory for the people over the despot

During the campaign, Donald Trump’s rhetoric was what one would expect from a representative of the capitalist elite in shock with the advance of the left: he attacked Mamdani, calling him a “communist” and threatening to financially strangle the city of New York, his birthplace, if the socialist won.

Such tactics aim to disqualify and intimidate a movement that directly opposes the concentration of wealth and power that Trump represents. Mamdani, in turn, demonstrated clarity when referring to Trump as a “despot”, identifying the authoritarian and undemocratic nature of his government.

However, the post-meeting press conference revealed a surprising reversal of the presidential stance. Trump, who promised cuts in public funds, now says he would feel “very comfortable” living under Mamdani’s management and rules out cutting federal funding, vital for social programs, education and housing.

The president, who boasts of his proximity to the Wall Street financial elite, found himself forced to express satisfaction with the discussion of topics that are at the heart of the class struggle. He even agreed that Mamdani’s ideas for tackling the housing crisis were noteworthy, an alignment unthinkable just a few weeks earlier.

This is a crucial tactical victory for the elected mayor. Zohran Mamdani was elected on a platform that promises to make the city “prova de Trump”protecting its residents from harmful federal policies and funding social programs like universal child care and free buses through progressive taxation. By ensuring that vital federal funding will not be cut – which would be a disaster for his ambitious progressive agenda – he paves the way to implement the policies he has promised.

The challenge of maintaining the red line

For Mamdani, the crucial challenge now is to manage this newly thawed relationship without compromising its principles. His victory was a repudiation of the neoliberal and far-right politics represented by Trump. The president’s pragmatic cordiality is a double-edged sword: it neutralizes the immediate threat of funding cuts, but it can also be used by the right to suggest that the differences are less deep than they appear.

However, the dialogue initiated by Mamdani is an act of political responsibility. He is using the communication channel for what really matters: defending New Yorkers’ ability to live in their city, as he himself said.

This Friday’s meeting opened a fissure in the wall of hostility, proving that pragmatism around the population’s basic needs can, at least for now, triumph over polarized rhetoric.

The Republican leader, who tried to use federal power as a political weapon, was forced to retreat in the face of the social priority imposed by the new mayor.
