Jimmy Cliff, the singer and actor whose melodious voice helped turn reggae into a global phenomenon, has died aged 81.
A message from his wife, Latifa Chambers, on Instagram read: “It is with deep sadness that I share the news that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia. I am grateful to his family, friends, fellow artists and co-workers who shared his journey with him. To all his fans around the world, know that your support was his strength throughout his career… Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by his children, Lilty and Aken.
With hits like “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” Cliff’s upbeat musical temperament has earned him a large and lasting fan base. His starring role in the 1972 crime drama “The Harder They Come” was also acclaimed, with the film considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
He is one of the few musicians, alongside Bob Marley and others, to receive the Jamaican Order of Merit.
