The Israeli prime minister sought to consolidate support for Israel in 2024, amid rising tensions with President Biden’s administration.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s 2024 agenda revealed frequent and close contact with Republican senators in the US and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The diary, which was published this week at the request of the nonprofit group Hatzlaha, showed that Netanyahu held seven meetings and nine phone calls with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
The diary, much of which has been censored on national security grounds, also reveals that Blair and Netanyahu met seven times.
On October 29, 2024, the Israeli Prime Minister spoke with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed Bin Zayed, a call that was not publicized at the time.
The talks with Graham took place at a time of growing tension between Israel and the government of then US President Joe Biden over the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
According to Haaretz, although the exact conversations have not been publicized, they occurred as the Republican senator was trying to obtain more weapons for Israel and undermine Netanyahu’s arrest warrant at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
On May 8, the day after a telephone conversation with Netanyahu, Graham participated in a Senate budget committee hearing on delays in weapons deliveries.
During the hearing, Graham criticized the government’s decision to suspend some sales to Israel due to an alleged invasion of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.
“If we fail to provide weapons necessary to destroy the enemies of the State of Israel at a time of great danger, we will pay a price,” Graham said.
“This is obscene. It’s absurd. Give Israel what they need to fight the war they can’t afford to lose.”
That same month, he also pressured the US to impose sanctions on the ICC over Netanyahu’s arrest warrant, calling it “outrageous conduct against the State of Israel.”
He told Congress that the court was “biased and corrupt toward Israel.”
Although Biden provided financial and diplomatic support to Israel during the attack on Gaza, tensions arose over the extent of the operation, which has been classified as genocide by several human rights groups and legal experts.
President Donald Trump’s rise to power in November 2024 saw Netanyahu attempt to strengthen relations with the US and guarantee carte blanche for Israel’s actions in Gaza and the other occupied territories.
Last week, the UN Security Council approved Resolution 2803, which supports the creation of an international stabilization force and puts Trump in supreme control of Gaza.
The document also names its “Peace Council” as the entity that will oversee the implementation of the plan for a period of two years. Blair’s involvement in this has been widely reported.
Ralph Wilde, a leading international law scholar and practitioner, told Middle East Eye that the resolution attempts to codify the “trusteeship” over Gaza, a colonial arrangement that violates the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
