A new survey by CBS News reveals that a large majority of Americans believe that the presidency should explain what the US intends to do in relation to Venezuela. For 76% of the population, this has not yet been done clearly.
The survey shows that Americans, regardless of party affiliation, have little confidence in the declared intentions regarding possible military intervention in the Latin American country.
Furthermore, many see Venezuela not as a greater threat, but as a lesser threat to the US. Of those interviewed, 48% consider the country to be of little danger, 39% as not at all dangerous and only 13% as a real threat.
Opposition to military action is predominant: the idea of using force in the Venezuelan country does not have unanimous support, not even among Republicans. Only 30% of Americans are in favor of armed intervention in Venezuela.
Three in four Americans believe that Trump would need congressional approval before taking any military action in Venezuela — including more than half of Republican voters among them.
Interestingly, only 1 in 5 respondents say they have heard a lot about US military actions there, suggesting that there is a general perception of a lack of information about their real purposes.
Regarding more recent attacks on suspected drug trafficking vessels, there is division: just over half approve of these actions, mainly driven by strong support among Republicans. But in general, Americans ask to see proof that those vessels were actually transporting drugs.
Most also do not believe that US military action would significantly alter the amount of drugs entering the country.
Within Trump’s support base, “MAGA” Republicans (more aligned with him) are more in favor of intervention than other Republicans. Some of them say that Trump has already explained the reasons well, and, in return, they believe that the action could reduce drug trafficking into the USA.
On the other hand, many who refuse to support military action — including within the Republican Party itself — define their priorities in terms of the economy: they are more likely to judge the government by how it deals with inflation and the cost of living than by what it does abroad.
