The mayor-elect of New York, Zohran Mamdani, made a public appeal for citizens to avoid consuming Starbucks products in support of baristas on strike in the United States. The strike that began on the so-called “Red Cup Day”, a date of great movement in the chain, involves around 1,000 workers in approximately 65 stores, and could expand to more than 500 units.

In a post on He finished with the slogan: “No contract, no coffee.”

The strike is organized by the Starbucks Workers United union and is based on complaints of unfair labor practices, unpredictable schedules, understaffing and stalled collective contract negotiations. The action coincides with the height of the holiday season for the company and the promotion of the red reusable cup, when stores normally see high traffic.

Starbucks, for its part, said that less than 4% of its retail workforce is unionized, and that the majority of branches remained operating normally, including on the day of the strike. The company further stated that it offers average wages above $30 per hour (with benefits) for hourly partners.
