Moscow condemned the actions of the United States in the recent escalation of military tensions in the Caribbean and off the coast of Venezuela, — which target vessels linked to drug trafficking, according to Washington — calling them “illegal” and “unacceptable”.
In recent months, the US has expanded naval and air operations in the Caribbean region, claiming to be combating drug trafficking on the route between Venezuela and the American market. At least 60 people are believed to have died in attacks on more than a dozen suspected vessels.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, through its spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, declared that “the actions of the West towards countries that want to follow their own policies are absolutely unacceptable” when commenting on US pressure on Venezuela.
In a more recent statement, Minister Sergei Lavrov described as “illegal and unacceptable” the US attacks on Venezuelan vessels allegedly linked to drug trafficking. He stated that such acts were being carried out “without trial or investigation, and without presenting any facts.” Which, according to Lavrov, denotes conduct typical of “countries that consider themselves above the law”.
Moscow’s withdrawal in defense of Caracas reinforces the polarization between the US and Russia in the Western Hemisphere. Russia not only criticizes Washington’s actions but also positions itself as a strategic supporter of Venezuela, an allied country.
For the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro, American maneuvers are seen as part of broader pressure that could lead to regime change. The Russian denunciation contributes to legitimizing the current government of the Latin American country and expanding the regional and international scope of the conflict.
