Gamers have been looking forward to Grand Theft Auto VI for years. But their patience is tested again. Rockstar Games postpones the long-awaited release again, which immediately led to a decline in the parent company’s share price.
Rockstar postpones GTA VI release to November 2026
Rockstar Games has announced that the release of Grand Theft Auto VI will be postponed to November 19, 2026. According to the company, more time is needed to “ensure the quality fans expect”. The game was originally scheduled to be released in 2025, but has previously been postponed several times. The most recent scheduled release date, before this delay, was May 26, 2026.
Rockstar also apologizes for the long wait and thanks fans for their patience and support. The announcement also hit the financial market. Immediately after the postponement, shares of parent company Take-Two fell by more than 18 percent. At the time of writing, the stock is trading at a loss of 7.8 percent.
Despite the recent decline, the hype surrounding the new game has led to an upward trend in the stock in recent years. In 2023, Take-Two was still under $100. At the time of writing, the stock is worth about $230, after reaching an all-time high of almost $265 in October.
Most hyped game in years
For those unfamiliar with the game: GTA is an open-world action game in which players can freely roam, drive and complete missions in a fictional city. You can do pretty much anything you can think of. As the name ‘Grand Theft Auto’, or car theft, suggests, the game is all about crime. Weapons, robberies and chaos in the city are also part of the gameplay.
GTA VI is the successor to Grand Theft Auto V, which was released in 2013. Twelve years later, fans are still waiting for a sequel. The hype is great, because the franchise is the most successful game of all time. GTA V alone sold more than 185 million copies and earned Take-Two billions of dollars.
With GTA VI, Rockstar Games wants to surpass all previous records. According to analyst Michael Pachter, the development budget is around $1.5 billion. This makes it the most expensive game production ever. The new part should surpass its predecessor with better graphics, a larger game world and even better gameplay. The game takes place in a location recognizable to fans: Vice City, based on real Miami.
