Some still find it difficult to pronounce the name, but for us the arrival of Zohran Mamdani to the mayor of New York.
In fact, I mentioned him in dozens of interviews during the campaign. I did it every time they told us that everything was turning inevitably to the right, and we repeated: look at Mamdani (because of the political symptom he expresses), look at the marches shouting “No Kings”, the general strike in Italy, the massive mobilizations for Palestine…
This is not minor, because in the international situation Not everything seems to be a turn as unilateral or as just to the right as the majority opposition in our country needs to show to justify their lack of a political project.
Ignore any phenomenon that questions that “in Argentina a ballot between good and evil was defined” or that political programs and proposals “are discussed after the elections” It is functional to those who had nothing to show in the recent past or in the future, but it is very far from the social needs that do require discussing the construction of housing, free transportation, as well as the genocide in Palestine, all things that Mamdani stated in his campaign.
The candidate comes from DSA (an independent organization that presents candidates within the Democratic Party). He was vilified by Trump and the traditional political leadership, who hurled all kinds of racist insults at him and raised millions of dollars to sabotage his campaign. That’s why, His overwhelming victory represents a resounding defeat not only for Trump, but also for the leadership of the Democratic Party.who comes from being the face of the genocide in Gaza (another “forbidden” topic in the Argentine political debate), and especially for the sectors of that party that attacked him.
Thousands of young people who do not see a future joined the campaign. They deeply distrust the Democrats themselves and were excited to confront the far right; They are increasingly open to anti-capitalist ideas. Various surveys show that a 62% of young Americans between 18 and 29 years old say they have a favorable opinion of socialismwhile 34% think the same about communism.
How can we not read that in an international key? How can we not think that this phenomenon is not only in the United States when we see the youth of various countries mobilizing in defense of a massacred people like the Palestinians, or voting for the left in Berlin, or marching shouting “we blocked everything” in Italy (among many other phenomena that we could mention)?
Mamdani will not only have to confront the Trump government, but also the Democratic Party; Therefore, it is also proposed that the workers, together with the youth, build an independent political force.
Those who voted for him will face the same dilemma as always: Without organization and autonomous struggle, the interests of the powerful cannot be affected. with which they dreamed in the campaign, which is why they become the tasks of the moment.
Here he leaves us a great message and, why not, a challenge for the left that is totally willing to take the fight for these demands to the end, which is only possible by affecting the interests of the dominant sectors. They never gave us anything, we women know that.
Also, it is good to remember that this city has been governed by the right for years. The traditional opposition increasingly accepts its logic, despite the fact that Large unions, enormous social and political organizations reside here, it seems that it is never the time to kick the board.
The benches that we conquer, mI bench around the city, they will be at the service of organizing that fightto take on that challenge, to be a point of support for the fight that will inevitably be extra-parliamentary. Because we deserve to fight for great objectives, without resignation or absurd meekness.
And also so that the City of Buenos Aires stops being an expulsive city for working families, so that the Subway and all transportation are not a heavy burden on our pockets.so that we fight for housing against real estate speculation, for public health and education, for culture, art and the rights of women and dissidents, for youth.
Because for us everything doesn’t end with the campaign and we won’t hide until further notice… this is just beginning.
Some still have a hard time pronouncing the name, but for us the arrival of Zohran Mamdani to the mayor’s office of New York was nothing new.
In fact, I mentioned him in dozens of interviews during the campaign. I did it every time they told us that everything turned around unfailingly…
