In recent years, the expansion of BRICS has become a priority for the founding nations. In 2024the block received Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates as new members. The following year, in 2025a Indonesia became a full member — a move considered a strategic milestone for the group’s presence in Southeast Asia.
Partner countries and new international architecture
The expansion of BRICS reflects the growing interest of developing countries in diversify economic and financial alliances. From January 1, 2026these countries became part of technical forums and work meetings of the New Development Bank (NBD) — financial institution created by BRICS and headquartered in Shanghai. The “official partner” category allows participation in infrastructure projects, sustainable financing and intra-bloc tradebut still without the right to vote on central decisions.
According to diplomatic sources interviewed by the agency SputnikMalaysia has been holding “preliminary talks” with the BRICS expansion committee since mid-2024, especially after Indonesia’s accession. In an interview with the local press, the Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry, Zafrul Abdul Azizstated that joining the bloc “would open new doors of financing and trade” in areas such as clean energy, technology and infrastructure.
“BRICS represents a network of opportunities that can reduce dependence on traditional financial structures and allow for a more balanced insertion of the Global South in the world economy,” said Zafrul.
