The still president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, is putting a real challenge to the national leadership of the Popular Party and its president, Alberto Núñez Feijóo. More than his resignation after the latest revelations about his whereabouts on the day of the dana and the boos at the funeral for the 237 victims, the fight is over who will be his replacement in office. However, the tension at this time is so great that the PP no longer even knows if the head of the Consell will resign from his positions this Monday or, even, if he could entrench himself without setting a date for his resignation.
Carlos Mazón wants to protect his succession, while the management of Génova Street prefers to clean up and impose its candidate, the current mayor of València, María José Catalá, who, until now, has always refused to assume the regional reins and prefers to focus on the management of Spain’s third city. Feijóo, who has not yet put Catalá’s name on the table, wants Mazón out and imposes the substitute, who should have the approval of Vox. For his part, the president of the Valencian PP wants his number two, Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca, to occupy his position.
Mazón threatens with an electoral call for January in which he would not be a candidate, but which would place the PP in a delicate position due to the possible mobilization of the left and the growth of Vox. Feijóo wanted a solution this Sunday and, after the fruitless phone calls, he will have to wait throughout this Monday. Negotiations continue “in the face of a dog” between the national PP and the regional PP.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who has a steering committee this Monday, plans to speak at 12 noon, and at that press conference he should be able to explain what the solution to the Mazón case is. Génova’s idea is that Carlos Mazón announces his decision beforehand, but the reality is that no one knows what he will do. What was taken for granted this weekend – the imminent departure of the president of the Generalitat – is now not at all clear. The head of the Consell and president of the Valencian PP wants to mark the times and design his succession.
Before Feijóo’s intervention – and, who knows, perhaps Mazón -, at nine in the morning the journalist Maribel Vilaplana will be questioned by the Catarroja judge, who had lunch with Mazón on the afternoon of DANA and is the only witness of his actions until 8 p.m. on October 29, 2024.
For now, what has become evident this Sunday is Feijóo’s impotence to force Mazón to make a decision that, basically, involves resigning and making way. The team of the president of the Generalitat has been leaking its intentions for several days and threatening an early election. The Valencian Popular Party, without informing Génova, launched Vicente Mompó, president of the Valencia Provincial Council, on Saturday as Mazón’s successor and candidate for the 2027 elections, as well as leader of the regional PP after the organization of a congress. To that supposed congress of the Valencian PP—postponed sine the since July of this year—the former president of the Generalitat Francisco Camps would appear.
Everything passes through the hands of Vox
For any vote on a new president, the support of Vox in the Corts is necessary, so the ultra party must be consulted. If an agreement is not reached, early elections could be forced. Carlos Mazón maintains a direct line with Santiago Abascal and has shown that, in negotiations with the ultra party, he acts independently. You just have to remember his investiture pact with Vox in July 2023, without the approval of Génova, and that cost Alberto Núñez Feijóo the general elections. Subsequently, and against the criteria of the other autonomous communities, the ultras approved Mazón’s 2024 budgets, when Abascal maintained the veto in other territories.
It is also important to take into account the pressure exerted by the 160 regional government officials, in addition to the 60 advisors who depend on Mazón. All these people, who on the day of the funeral applauded the head of the Consell for a minute, need the solution proposed by Mazón to be the one chosen. The arrival of María José Catalá or any other candidate could leave them out in the cold.
