The election in the Province of Buenos Aires left a surprising victory for La Libertad Avanza against Fuerza Patria, overcoming the beating it suffered in the provincial elections on September 7. In this framework of strong polarization, the Left Front surpassed 5% of the votes and obtained almost 450 thousand votes with important results in the strategic third electoral section that brings together La Matanza and the entire southern suburbs.
In this way, the left is left with two seats that will be occupied by Nicolás del Caño and Romina del Plá, who will take office starting in December. Of the total of 35 seats that were put up for renewal in Buenos Aires in this election, 17 will be for La Libertad Avanza and the other 16 will be for Peronism. The rest of the political forces were unable to obtain representation since they did not exceed the necessary floor.
Just like on September 7, the highest vote for the Unidad Left Front was recorded in La Matanza, exceeding 7% of the votes, the most important and popular district in the province where more than 700 thousand people and 68% of the voter vote. Merlo and Presidente Perón were the other districts where the left made its best election, with both above 6% of the total. Berisso, Morón, Florencio Varela, Lanús, José C. Paz, Almirante Brown, Berazategui, Quilmes, Tres de Febrero, Hurlingham and San Miguel were other of the main districts.
The election of the left means an important recognition of those who have always been on the same side, building an important resistance in the streets together with all the sectors that came out to fight and confront the Government’s adjustment plans at the service of the IMF and big capital. From accompaniment to the struggle of retirees, the Garrahan Hospital and the disability group, to all the conflicts of workers who face dismissals and attacks such as those of Secco, Georgalos, Shell, Ilva, Siderca, INTI, aeronautical companies, among others.
At the same time, it represents a vote of confidence from an important sector in those who have always opted to build a strong and consistent opposition, in the streets and in Congress. Unlike the negotiations that sectors of Peronism held with the national government, providing support to vote on key laws such as money laundering or Bullrich’s repressive laws.
The government manages to obtain a surprising result thanks to the polarization and bailout of Donald Trump, but it fails to resolve the co-contradictions of its structural weakness and the lack of political volume to carry out the reforms it intends and announced prior to the campaign. Faced with this new situation, and the failure of Peronism’s bet on passivity to defeat Milei at the polls, it will be necessary to put all efforts into building a true alternative against the attack plans prepared by the government. The result of the Left Front is inscribed in this perspective, as a support point for the fights that will come and that will only be resolved in the streets.
