This Tuesday (14), the United States carried out a bombing raid against a boat in waters close to the coast of Venezuela. According to President Donald Trump, the vessel transported drugs and was operated by members of a “narco-terrorist” organization. Six people died during the action, carried out in international waters.

Trump stated that the attack was authorized after American intelligence confirmed that the boat was part of illicit networks linked to trafficking and terrorism. Since August, the US has been conducting a military operation in the southern Caribbean, claiming to combat drug trafficking. Ships, aircraft and a nuclear submarine take part in missions in the region, which have become more frequent in recent weeks.

The offensive, however, has generated strong international criticism. Human Rights Watch accused the US government of violating international law and carrying out “illegal extrajudicial executions”. The topic was debated at the UN Security Council last Friday (10), with countries warning of the risk of military escalation in the Caribbean.

Venezuela’s government called for an independent investigation and said the victims of the attack were local fishermen, not drug traffickers. Caracas also denounced the operation as a “provocation” by the United States and ordered the mobilization of troops in coastal regions.

Behind the scenes, the White House neither confirms nor rules out a larger offensive. Sources cited by the website Axios claim that Trump asked the Pentagon for a “menu of options” on future actions in the neighboring country, while Caracas trains militiamen and civilians to respond to a possible invasion.
